Satoshi Stories: What Was Satoshi’s Vision?
In this episode, Jeff Garzik talks about what Satoshi wanted to build… and why.
In this video, Jeff Garzik discusses the original vision behind Bitcoin, as outlined in Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper. He explains that Satoshi’s goal was clear from the start: to create a decentralized, peer-to-peer digital currency. To achieve this, Satoshi used cryptographic building blocks that were already well-established, like SHA-256, proof of work, hash chains, and Merkle trees.
While Satoshi didn’t invent these technologies, he combined them in a groundbreaking way to form Bitcoin. Jeff also reflects on how Bitcoin has evolved since Satoshi’s time. In the early days, it was common for Satoshi to introduce major network changes, including hard fork upgrades that everyone had to follow. However, in 2024, this approach has largely fallen out of favor. There is now resistance to hard forks and even some opposition to any kind of network upgrade in certain segments of the Bitcoin community. Jeff suggests that Satoshi would likely see today’s environment as very different from the early days of Bitcoin.
